Ethical Traveler needs volunteers in the following areas:
- Writing news articles
- Researching stories
- Assisting with financial proposals
- Helping organize campaigns
- Website development and maintenance
- Communicating with corporations re: sponsorship opportunities

Specifically, ET is looking to fill the following needs:
Web developer
Currently we are seeking one or more qualified volunteers to assist in the redevelopment of our website. Increased functionality for website visitors is one of our main areas of focus. Applicants should be proactive and self-motivated, with a curiosity about the world and a love of travel. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of and experience with the following:
- CSS
- XHTML
- PHP
- MySQL
- javascript
Ideally our applicant would be located in the San Francisco Bay Area, but we are willing to make an exception for non-local highly qualified individuals. We are also willing to mentor those individuals who have a basic foundation in the above technologies and a strong desire to learn more.
Assistant to the Executive Director
The current available position is for Assistant to the Executive Director. This volunteer opportunity will require a commitment of 3-5 hours per week, and involves:
- Becoming familiar with the mission and goals of Ethical Traveler, a non-profit project of the Earth Island Institute;
- Assisting the Executive Director with outreach to other non-profits, and making contact with travel providers and outdoor adventure suppliers;
- Research and follow-up for speaking opportunities, in the USA and abroad;
- Communicating with potential members on specific questions regarding travel in general, and our mission in particular;
- Assisting the Executive Director with fund-seeking and grant writing;
- Outreach to our Board of Advisors.
Applicants should have a curiosity about the world, and must be familiar with basic software like Word, Excel, and Adobe PhotoShop. Good writing skills are essential, and love of travel is a big plus!
